Signs It Might Be Time To Replace Your Windows

May 22, 2026 · 5 min read

Not every tired window needs replacing. Knowing which symptoms point to a repair and which point to end of life saves both money and disruption.

Condensation between the panes

Moisture trapped inside a sealed double-glazed unit means the seal has failed. The glass unit itself can sometimes be replaced without changing the whole window, so it's worth asking about both options.

Draughts and difficult operation

Air movement around a closed sash can often be traced to worn weatherstripping or hardware, both of which are repairable. Sashes that stick, drop or won't stay open may point to frame movement, which is harder to correct in isolation.

Rot, soft timber and damaged frames

Soft spots in a timber frame, particularly along the sill, usually indicate water is getting in. Localised rot can sometimes be cut out and repaired; widespread softness generally means the frame has reached the end of its life.

Noise, comfort and everyday use

Comfort matters too. Rooms that feel cold near the glass, or street noise that makes a room hard to use, are legitimate reasons to consider replacement even when the existing units are technically functional.
